I create small works or pocket pieces to brighten up a corner or to highlight a space in your home. Each has as much punch as a larger work of art but doesn’t overwhelm the location. A collection of small works hanging in a hallway transforms the space into a gallery, where a large piece, often, cannot be fully appreciated.

I began painting on grass mats over ten years ago, utilizing both ink and acrylic paint to create simple African figures that stood over four feet tall. As my skill has developed over the years, the “Textures collection” has matured and currently showcases an array including small, elaborately detailed designs that celebrate African masks and paintings on papyrus, portraits and over-sized still life.

I often paint what I hear, bringing form and substance to sound. “Painting musicians in the throes of harmonic passion, is the closest I can come to articulating, what must be, one of the most powerfully fulfilling and spiritual expressions. The sound alone transports the listener to another place. When one experiences such a performance, you become one with the musician and the audience!” I am sometimes transported to The Savoy by Dizzy’s Horn or The Cotton Club by Cab’s swing or Ella’s Scatting.

The most celebrated and collected of all my large works, Big Foot Blues is a true evolution of art. From the original works on watercolor paper to the recent work on museum canvas, the transition in color, substance and depth is quite dramatic.
